If you go down to the woods today
... the bumps could all be gone.
The natural play area in Dunnottar Woods is under threat due to Health & Safety concerns. The play area, which is next to the quarry car park, consists of a series of grassy bumps and hollows. These were put in place by the Forestry Commission and the Dunnottar Woodland Park Association. Now, a decade later, they are to be removed. The area has been evaluated by a bike jump expert who highlighted that there are multiple access points to each hillock. Given the speed that can be accumulated byy riding down the quarry sides, there is potential for a very serious collision. | |
| However, the site is not just used by bikes - it is a natural play area for local childrenof all ages, toddlers to teens. Yes, the children develop skills and agility on their bikes but the area is also used for sledging in the winter. The bumps have become "desert islands" and "Teletubbie land". It is a place where children can be active, play freely and use their imaginations to have adventures in the natural environment. Many children walk or cycle there and are allowed to play unsupervised. For those lamenting the constraints of modern childhood, it is a far cry from "cotton wool" kids or the cyber generation.
